Strengthening Community Policing in Juba: SRIC Trains Police Joint Operation Sectors (PJOs) and Community Committees

The Security Research and Information Centre (SRIC), in collaboration with the South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) Directorate of Community Policing and the South Sudan Law Society (SSLS), is conducting a two-day training for Police Joint Operation Sectors (PJOs) and Police Community Relation Committees (PCRCs) drawn from the Gudele and Munuki areas of Juba, Central Equatoria.

This training is part of the Just Future Project, supported by the Dutch government through the African Security Sector Network (ASSN). The initiative aims to improve understanding and practice of community policing by sensitising PJOs and PCRCs on their complementary roles in promoting security, fighting crime, and building trust between law enforcement and local communities.

Through interactive sessions including discussions, experience sharing, and case studies from South Sudan and Kenya, participants are developing strategies to strengthen police-community partnerships, improve coordination across security agencies, and address challenges to effective community policing.

The training also supports ongoing security sector reforms by positioning PCRCs as crucial grassroots actors who rebuild trust and enhance peace and security nationwide. By maintaining dialogue between communities and the police, PCRCs place communities at the centre of policing and ensure their active involvement in police reform discussions. Their role in improving coordination and information-sharing among law enforcement agencies enhances the efficiency and responsiveness of the national police.

Overall, the activity reinforces inclusive security approaches and grassroots engagement as foundational pillars for sustainable peace and stability in Juba’s neighborhoods.
