  2. Planning Workshop for the Regional Institute for Peace and Security Studies (RIPSS) March 16-17, 2007, Dutchotel, Accra

    BACKGROUND:

Dr Funmi Olonisakin of the Kings College, UK, chair of the workshop traced the historical developments of the Regional Institute for Peace and Security Studies (RIPSS).

According to her the discussion for the establishment of RIPSS began in 1999 (an original idea of the Center for Democracy and Development, CDD, Nigeria) having identified the yawning gap that existed in the security sector where expertise outside of the military did not exist, and hence the need for an institution to serve as a forum for exchange and dialogue among key stakeholders in various African countries.

  1. Workshop Name: SSR Provisions in Peace Agreements: Report of A Workshop Held At The Equatorial Hotel, Kampala, Uganda, 30th June 2006

    Objectives of the Workshop

This Workshop brought together a number of researchers and resource persons to discuss issues of methodology for the Project on ‘SSR Provisions in Peace Agreements”.

The case studies for the project are drawn from Central America  (Guatemala and El Salvador), Southern Africa, (Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa), West Africa  (Liberia, Sierra Leone, Cote d’Ivoire) and Eastern Africa/Great Lakes Region (the Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo  (DRC), and Burundi). Although East Timor (Timor – Leste) is included in the case-studies, the researcher (Joao Saldanha) was unable to make the workshop because of the ongoing crisis in that country.

Professor Hutchful opened the discussion by welcoming everybody and briefly reviewing the purpose of the Workshop. This was to ensure that everyone was on the same page in terms of the issues to be addressed, the methodologies to be deployed, the materials and sources available for the case studies, and the challenges and risks (if any) anticipated. It was not, he stressed, intended at this time to make substantive findings and recommendations, although tentative lessons were to be shared. More..More details»»
