SADSEM is a network of nine partner institutions in the 14 member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The SADSEM network seeks to contribute to peace and security in Southern Africa by strengthening the democratic management of its defence forces and other security organs. It does this by offering specialised training programmes to police and military officers and others involved in managing security in the region.

SASDEM also undertakes research on security issues and helps governments in the SADC region to develop their defence policies. The network is managed in Johannesburg at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Centre for Defence and Security Management (CDSM).

ASDR

ASDR is an independent, non-governmental institute based in Accra, Ghana, specializing in issues of security and their relationship with democratic consolidation. In this effort, the ASDR brings together legislators, scholars, defence and security officials, and civil society activists in a serious, informed, and sustained exchange on defence and security issues.

ASDR engages these issues on a regional basis, combining advocacy and dialogue on the one hand while committed to research and analysis on the other hand as a means of expanding the database on the security sector available to civilian decision-makers and non-specialists. ASDR collaborates with likeminded organisations and draws its associates from among scholars and professional researchers, journalists, NGOs, MIP officers (active and retired), and Security Sector practitioners.
