The African Security Sector Network (ASSN), received the shocking and sad news of the sudden passing of our long-standing member, friend and colleague, Dr Thomas Jaye, fondly known as ‘TJ’, on July 31, 2020 at the age of 63.
TJ was Deputy Director for Research at the Faculty of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) until January 2019, when he returned to Liberia as Director of the Institute of Policy Studies and Research, at the University of Liberia.
In ASSN circles, however, TJ was better known as the focal point and Lead Consultant in Liberia for the Security Sector Transformation Advisory Group, an informal consortium of the ASSN, Kings College and DCAF, formed to support the Security Sector Reform efforts of the Government and people of Liberia. TJ was attached to the Governance Commission as SSR Advisor, where he led (among other things) on the Liberia Security Sector Review and the development of National Security and Integrated Border Management Strategies, along with a review of the National Bureau of Immigration and work on the Integration of Veterans. TJ was also central to our training and capacity-building programme for the Defence and Security Committees in the Liberian Congress (House and Senate) from March 2006 to July 2009.
Our deepest condolences to TJ’s family and the University of Liberia fraternity.
Rest in eternal peace, TJ. We will forever cherish your memory and dedication to the work of the ASSN as well as the cause of African Peace and Security at large.
ASSN would like to invite all colleagues who wish to memorialize TJ to send their tributes to email@example.com.
